The sweeping curved roof style of the Minangkabau region of Sumatra evokes reminiscences of a majestic era gone by. On a weekend trip to Padang with my friend Maria, I was disappointed to see many once beautiful roofs replaced by corrugated iron and zinc – the stark reality of the present time. On the Bukit Tinggi road back to Padang, our van screeched to a halt. There was this beautiful restored house – I had found my perfect souvenir of Padang.
